LWR Coffee Project (Equal Exchange)
Lutheran World Relief launched the Coffee project with Equal Exchange, which adheres to fair trade standards on 100% of its products in 1997. By making a simple change from conventionally traded coffee to fairly traded coffee, such as Tanzanian Jubilee or any of the other coffees, Lutherans can make a big difference in the lives of coffee farmers. Because coffee farmers in Kilimanjaro (Tanzanian Jubilee coffee) have very small farms, even drinking one cup of coffee can "make a difference."
3,100 Lutheran congregations currently participate in the project. Fairly traded coffee often makes the difference between harvesting a crop at a loss or receiving a survivable wage.
Our congregation offers several types of coffee in 6 1/2 oz. bags at a prices ranging from $4 to $5.50. They are offered for sale on the second Sunday of the month, or may be special ordered in larger quantities. We have also begun offering fairly traded hot cocoa.
Any one interested in helping to sell the coffee, or interested in further advocacy on behalf of Lutheran World Relief Handcraft projects is encouraged to indicate their willingness to serve in this manner.
Red Cross Blood Drive
St. Mark hosts a Red Cross Blood Drive at the church every other month (January, March, May, July, September, November) from 1 to 7:00 p.m. This provides the Red Cross with a regular supply of blood donations and volunteers on a regular donation schedule. Volunteer opportunities exist to help at the blood drive as well as to donate blood. Give blood. It's easy, it's safe and it saves lives!
Cub Scouts
Cub Scouting is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Cub Scouting members join a Cub Scout pack and are assigned to a den, usually a neighborhood group of six to eight boys. Tiger Cubs (first-graders), Wolf Cub Scouts (second-graders), Bear Cub Scouts (third-graders), and Webelos Scouts (fourth- and fifth-graders) meet weekly.
Once a month, all of the dens and family members gather for a pack meeting under the direction of a Cubmaster and pack committee. The committee includes parents of boys in the pack and members of the chartered organization.
